Nirmal Sehgal has lived in Ponteland for 25 years with her husband and family.
Nirmal was born brought up and educated in India and came to England after getting married to an engineer, the son of an industrialist.
Nirmal and her husband settled in England in 1969 and they worked hard to have a good standard of living in this country. They first settled in Birmingham first Nirmal worked as a Librarian and she also helped out as a volunteer interpreter for those families who had settled in the area.
Nirmal and her family moved to the north east in 1975 as her brothers were already living in Newcastle upon Tyne and were running a successful retail and wholesale clothing business. Nirmal loved the clean and green friendly city of Newcastle and worked in the clothing retail business for five years.
She and her husband then began to run Lemington Post Office, where they faced various difficulties at first. With help, public support and hard work Nirmal and her husband worked hard to build up the business over 29 years whilst also giving sufficient time to bring up their family of three sons. Nirmal retired as an award winning longest serving Asian/British postmistress in the North East and in her free time collected for the Marie curie charity.
Nirmal then started volunteering in the Lemington community Centre and very soon joined the Ponteland Partnership committee and started volunteering in several ways in Ponteland She became a member of the Patient’s Representative group for the Ponteland Medical group . She has also been supporting the Ageing well group and Ponteland health walks on Tuesdays.
The Sehgal family have also set up and supported a charity ‘Inspired by Maya ‘ -which has raised a lot of money for cancer funds for local sick children in the RVI, this was after their granddaughter Maya was diagnosed by leukaemia at the age of Two luckily she got better.
Nirmal has been working with Northumberland COVID Community group and also volunteered as co-presenter and co-producer with radio spice FM.
Nirmal has also been helping Indian community through services being a Trustee to the Hindu Temple Newcastle and also serving as treasurer of a new Vedic Kirton Mandali prayer group for over 24 years She has lead two more Monthly socialising groups of Indian ladies for years for health and wellbeing.
Nirmal joined her local Conservative party some years ago and attended meetings as she was interested in what was happening in Ponteland. She was delighted to be elected to the Town Council in May 2021 which she feels has given her the chance to facilitate and serve the community. Nirmal is a member and Vice Chair of the Environment Working Party, the Highways Working Party, the Events Working Party and the Accounts Committee. Nirmal is also a Trustee and Vice Chair of Merton Hall. Nirmal wants to work hard to improve the area and help the residents of Ponteland West Ward to the best of her ability.
